Lucca
Squeezed
within its well-preserved city walls, Lucca encloses a historical
architectural heritage of masterpiece from different epochs. In the
vast plain area and on the hills surroundings the city are scattered
numerous magnificent villas, characterised by parks and gardens
abounding in tree-lined driveways, statues, fountains, plays of
water. The olive trees that colour the landscape with their typical
silvery-green provide an incomparable oil that is world famous.
Vines, too, contribute to characterising the landscape, particularly
in the hill zones, and produce the famous DOC wines of Montecarlo
and the Colline Lucchesi. Heading towards the mountains, the
traveller penetrates the Middle Valley of the Serchio, and the
arrives in the Garfagnana. A land of ancient traditions, it is a
very interesting natural environment that is highly varied from the
point of view of flora and fauna. The symbol of its cuisine id “farro”,
a cereal used ever since ancient times; also prevalent is chestnut
flour, which is used to prepare the famous “castagnaccio”, a typical
chestnut cake.
The Versilia
Living between
the Apuan Alps and the Tyrrhenian Sea, Versilia is a land with an
ancient history. The long coast includes localities of international
fame, with extensive beaches equipped with bathing establishments
offering all possible comforts.
The vast
natural patrimony consists of pine wood and Mediterranean “macchia.”.
The vicinity of the mountains of the sea brings about a climate
diversity among the various zones that is quite unusual and,
consequently, the growth of rare and precious floral species. With
its ateliers, the working of marble represents an unusual feature of
the territory, a tradition that preserves all its ancient
fascination, which is renewed with the works of young artists. The
local gastronomy presents dishes typical of both the coastal area
and the nearby mountains. Cultural events take place during the
entire year: of these, the most famous are the Viareggio Carnival,
the Puccini Festival at Torre del Lago, and the “Versiliana”.
