Livorno A territory rich in historical and archaeological testimonies, where there is an alternation of different natural environments, extended pine woods, kilometres of beaches, and ragged reefs, where Nature is preserved intact. Leghorn, an important commercial and tourist port, is the heart of the Etruscan coasts, which includes numerous very attractive coastal and hill towns. The natural and archaeological beauties are epitomised by the magnificent Baratti Gulf and by the Etruscan necropolises od Populonia that are included in the Parks of the Val di Cornia. The cypresses celebrated by the poet Carducci are a characteristic of Bolgheri, which is also the production site of vintage red wines such as those of the Val di Cornia, which has always been favourable to vine growing and wine making. The itineraries of the Wine Road wind through the countryside, amid villages, parish churches, ancient farms, wine cellars and estates. The cuisine, which is enriched by the fragrance of olive oil, is linked to traditions based on the local products that come both from the sea and from the hills of the hinterland. The Tuscan Arcipelago is a constellation of islands included today in a National Park. The islands of Elba and Capraia are the largest of these. All offer a landscape of great charm, and bear numerous signs of the ancient Mediterranean civilization, as they were the fundamental cross-roads for navigational routes in the Tyrrhennian Sea. In addition to the very lovely coasts, with localities dedicated to tourist hospitality, the interland also offers surprising views: steep, rocky, landscapes, extraordinary examples of Mediterranean “macchia”, and hills cultivated with olive groves and wines, where the mild temperature favours the production of first-class wines such as Aleatico and Moscato. The sea offers scenes that are still submerged in an enchanted atmosphere of rare beauty, with the possibility of practising aquatic sports such as surfing, sailing and diving. |
