Grosseto
Enclosed
within powerful Renaissance walls, Grosseto still preserves the
charm of a city made to man-sized dimensions. The numerous
archaeological sits scattered through the surrounding territory,
which testify to the Etruscan civilisation that flourished there,
are a source of continous discovery for visitors. The Maremma,
closed between Monte Amiata, The Metallifere hills, and Monte
Argentario, was a hostile land. The work of man has transformed it
into a land on incomparable beauty; it is a site of exceptional
environmental and landscape importance. The rocky promontories, the
beaches, the hills with their ancient fortified villages, constitute
a strong attraction for those who seek a perfect combining of nature
and culture. The ideal environmental conditions, together with a
very ancient tradition, explain the secret of the high quality of
its typical products, such as oil. Cheeses, and wines. Of the
latter, the most well-known are Morellino di Scansano, Bianco di
Pitigliano, and the red Sovana.
Monte Amiata,
The tallest peak in Tuscany, is characterised by a large
concentration of plantations. of –chestnut and beech – trees which
cover its woody slopes. This is a territory abounding in springs,
which preserves an inexhaustible source of extractive materials in
its subsoil. Significant traces of the signs of medieval culture are
found in the fortified villages, abbeys, and sanctuaries on the
slopes of the mountain, also by way of testimony to its strategic
position as a connecting road with the city of Rome. It is an ideal
place in all seasons: one can ski in winter, and go on long
excursions in the midst of nature in the spring and summer. With the
different villages situated in the environs, Monte Amiata forms a
landscape that is “fixed in time”. Products from the woods, such as
chestnuts, mushrooms, and raspberries, characterise the gastronomy
and the preparation of typical local dishes.
