Arezzo
The particular geographic position of the
province of Arezzo has made it a meeting place for different
civilisations and cultures. Crossed in great part by the Arno river,
which has its origin here, it is formed by four valleys: the
Casentino, the Upper Valdarno, the Valdichiana, and the Val Tiberina.
Famous
personages were born in this land, such as Piero della Francesca, in
Sansepolcro, Petrarch and Vasari in Arezzo, Masaccio in San Giovanni
Valdarno, and Pietro da Cortona and Luca Signorelli in Cortona.
Arezzo, the seat of important events such as the
Saracen Tournament, the Antiques Fair, and the international
exhibition dedicated to the goldsmith’ art, preserves important
signs of ancient history of the Etruscan and Roman periods. The
centuries-old woods and forest of the Casentino, the hills, and the
industrious valleys house parish churches, medieval villages,
castles, and the spiritual centres of Camaldoli and La Verna |
